elquim

If I woke up one day in Barcelona completely hung over from a long night of pAArtying and intense alcohol consumption, I know exactly what I would do to feel better. I’d go to La Boqueria and hit up a tapas joint called El Quim. Once someone leaves their bar seat and I have the presence of mind to nab it, I’ll order some cava or beer to drink and eat some legit hangover food. Luckily, the food here at El Quim is not the typical North American hangover food drenched in grease, but instead, sauces and hearty flavours that sooth the stomach queasy from the deterioration of the lining the night before.

We came to El Quim after a long day of travelling and it was exactly what we needed at the time. It was extremely hot in Barca, so we ordered some beer and some anchovies in vinegar to start, something I found you can never go wrong with in Spain. Anchovies in Spain are nothing like the North American canned version. They are served as fillets and cured with olive oil, vinegar, olives and garlic which give it a nice sour and tangy flavour to balance the natural fattiness of the fish. Next, we got fried eggs with baby squid, a dish I can only wish to have for breakfast on a daily basis. As we cut through the eggs, the creamy, gooey richness of the yolk mixed with the squid ink to yield the perfect complementing sauce. To top it of, we ended our meal with assorted wild mushrooms sauteed with an egg and caramelised foie gras. They added some sweet and heavy black sauce to it which just blew the dish out of the park.

Everything we had was so simply done but extremely well executed and because of that, it definitely hit the spot. My only regret is not having the chance to eat here a second time. To quote Col James Rhodes in Iron Man “Next time baby!”
